Google has continued rolling out regular updates to Gemini for Home and the Google Home app, with its latest release bringing one of the most extensive sets of improvements yet. While Gemini remains a major part of the updates, Google is also addressing long-standing issues across its Nest and Google Home hardware, introducing better streaming performance, smoother audio playback, and improved smart home controls.
The latest update focuses on making Google’s smart home ecosystem more reliable, from connected speakers and security cameras to Wi-Fi equipment and Matter-compatible devices.
Google Home Adds More Useful Matter Controls
Beyond Gemini, the Google Home app is receiving several practical improvements designed to make managing connected devices easier.
On Android, the app can now recognize specific Matter device types, including compatible garage doors, gates, windows, and cabinets. It displays more appropriate device icons and controls, making it easier for users to identify and manage their smart home equipment.
Compatible Matter smart plugs and energy monitors are also gaining improved energy monitoring features. Users can now see real-time power consumption and cumulative energy usage directly from device tiles and control screens.
Google is also introducing a shortcut for thermostat controls and Home View, allowing users to quickly switch to an energy-saving temperature setting before leaving home.
Android foldable users should also notice improvements to camera live view when opening or closing their devices, providing a smoother viewing experience.
Google Improves Nest and Google Home Hardware
One of the biggest parts of this update involves Google’s smart home hardware. Nest and Google Home speakers, Google TV Streamer devices, and Nest Wi-Fi equipment are all receiving improvements.
The Chromecast with Google TV HD and 4K models are getting the August 2026 security patch, alongside updates targeting connectivity, streaming performance, and display-related issues.
For Nest Wifi routers and Wifi points, the new firmware introduces improved mesh network resilience, DNS fallback support, and general stability enhancements. These changes are intended to help maintain more reliable home network connections.
Google Home and Nest speakers are also receiving audio improvements. Streaming should now be smoother, with less overpowering bass and clearer playback, particularly at lower volume levels.
The update also addresses several frustrating problems, including disappearing speaker groups, Wi-Fi 7 connection failures, and Bluetooth playback that could unexpectedly pause after users issued a resume command.
Older Nest Cameras Receive Important Fixes
Google has not overlooked older Nest cameras that have been migrated to the Google Home app.
The latest improvements address Wi-Fi reconnection problems and slow night vision activation on first-generation Nest Cam devices.
Google has also fixed audio synchronization issues and unexpected restarts affecting Nest Hello devices. Meanwhile, Nest doorbells are receiving improvements to person detection and Familiar Face recognition.
Nest Cam IQ models are also getting a fix for an issue involving their status lights.
These changes are important for users who continue to rely on older Nest hardware, helping improve reliability without requiring them to replace their existing devices.
Gemini for Home Gets Better at Understanding Voice Commands
Alongside the hardware improvements, Google is continuing to refine Gemini for Home to make everyday voice interactions more dependable.
The assistant should now better understand requests to move music between rooms, reducing situations where users receive the familiar “Sorry, I did not understand” response.
Google is also addressing instances where the assistant incorrectly responded to background activity or appeared to react when nobody had spoken directly to it.
Smart display users should notice improvements when controlling YouTube TV through voice commands, as Gemini is becoming more reliable at recognizing and executing requests.
Another fix addresses a problem that could cause alarm and timer volumes to drop to zero. With the update, affected devices should now match alarm and timer volumes to the device’s overall volume level.
Google has also corrected an issue with volume controls. Previously, asking Gemini to adjust the volume of a speaker in another room could sometimes change the volume of the device receiving the voice command instead. Google says this behaviour has now been fixed.
What the Latest Google Home Update Means for Users
Google’s latest release shows that its smart home improvements are not limited to introducing more Gemini features. The company is also working on the underlying performance and reliability of its existing hardware and connected devices.
From better Matter controls and energy monitoring to improved speaker audio, stronger Wi-Fi stability, and more dependable Nest cameras, the update addresses several areas that directly affect everyday smart home experiences.
For existing Google Home and Nest users, these improvements could make managing connected devices more convenient while reducing some of the technical problems that have affected the ecosystem.
